DepositFREE™ renting

For tenants who want to rent without paying a deposit

Renting isn’t easy, especially when you have to come up with the rent as well as two months’ security deposit, all in one go. That’s why HouseME has come up with a solution that allows tenants to pay a little extra on their rent each month, in exchange for not putting down a deposit at all.

But first, a word about HouseME

HouseME is the digital renting specialist that uses technology to make renting easier, fairer and more affordable for both tenants and landlords. Our digital platform helps you easily view, bid on and apply for a home. We only charge one month’s deposit, protect you with a digital lease and secure payments, and connect you to 24/7 maintenance partners. But the best part is that you can apply to rent without paying a deposit at all.

DepositFREE™

HouseME lets you pay a little more each month and secure your dream home without paying a security deposit at all.

DepositFLEX™

You can also make a flexible deposit payment plan, with a portion paid upfront and a portion paid over the course of the lease.

Frequently asked questions

It depends. To get DepositFREE™, you will need to:

(1) Convince your landlord to transfer your lease to HouseME. This is because rent will need to be collected through our debit order system going forward, which the landlord needs to agree to.

(2) Pass the standard HouseME vetting. For example, we typically look for an income about 3x the rental, a good credit record, good references, monthly cost management that's evident in the bank statements, and we will need to have received all the requested documents and info.

Note that this product may not be offered on select portfolios.

Once your landlord has initiated the transfer to HouseME, you'll receive an email inviting you to create your own account and upload your application documents.

At a minimum, these will include:

(1) Scan of your ID or passport

(2) Proof of residence, such as a recent utility bill

(3) Three months' bank statements, which you can download from your online banking

(4) Proof of income, such as a salary slip or signed employment contract

However, if you are self-employed, not a South African national, applying together with someone else, or have other particular circumstances, you may be asked to submit additional documentation. For more info on this, check out our support page here.

Tenants are still invoiced for any property damage or utilities (any deposit claim) at the end of the lease and HouseME will run a debit order for the amount invoiced.

Yes, you are able to pay your deposit during the course of the lease and the DepositFREE fee will not be charged once the deposit is paid in full.
